Rufous Treepie

Rufous Treepie belongs to the crow family and is a common bird in the villages of Kerala.

I got these pictures from my surroundings and these birds are very much used to human beings.

They are usually seen in groups of three or four and make loud calls. There are actually three or more different types of calls. Three of them I have noticed clearly, one being ‘u-kree u-kree‘, other being crow-like and the third one is more musical. The bird can be seen throughout the day, but is more active during the afternoon. Rufous treepies are very friendly with Racket Tailed Drongos, and they sometimes mimics the other.
Since these birds prefer to sit on coconut leaves and hang from them, Rufous Treepies are called ‘olenjali‘ in Malayalam.

Body is Earth colored, head and neck are dark brown-black, tail is black tipped, and the wings have white and black patches along the side.

Family: Corvidae (Crow family)
Species: Dendrocitta vagabunda

Hope you liked.

Beautiful shots! This is a very common bird in West Bengal too. They make a very different sound than others.
