Kumarakom is primarily known for its variety of migratory and local birds.  I was not able to find many birds there as it was off season. But I was happy that I could get this unexpected monitor lizard. It was very shy, and hid under the bushes after sometime.

Common Indian Monitor, also known as Bengal monitor belongs to the family Varanidae. Species: Varanus bengalensis.
