Rose Apple and its Flowers

Do you like Rose Apples? I like them :) Also its bright rose color is so attractive. But its flowers are not very colourful like the fruits, but they are interesting. Here are some of them from my backyard.

The large number of stamens make the flowers unique. They have four petals and are light yellow in color. The fruits are bell shaped, and the seeds inside it are black.

How to grow:

  • Grown by planting seeds in the soil, not by stem cutting.
  • It usually starts flowering within one year.
  • Generally grows to a height of 7 – 8 meters.

The fruits are initially white in color. Then gradually it turns to rose, and when fully ripened it becomes bright red. The fruit is full of water content and is sweetish too with a bit of sourness. So it is very good to consume during summers, and is a favourite for children especially, in villages it is a fun for children to climb up on these small trees to get those nice fruits.

A number of dishes can be made from this fruit, including Theeyal, a very delicious one made using coconut.

Botanical name: Syzygium samarangense

Malayalam name: Champa, fruit is called as Champakka.

  2. Mmmm... crunchy and juicy Chaampakka! I don't think I notices the flowers earlier. The fruits are definitely prettier than the flowers, for a change. :)

I hope you are having a happy new year, Abhinav. :)
